What is the hot dipping sauce served in Thai restaurants?

It's come with the meal at several Thai restaurants I've eaten at. It's brownish, and really hot. Does it have a name. Can you buy it bottled? Does anyone have a recipe? What is the hot dipping sauce served in Thai restaurants?

it is called "Prik Nam Pla" and it is fish sauce with chillies. Doesn't really taste like fish, does it? If you have an Asian grocery in your town, you can buy the fish sauce but you have to add some more ingredients. If you don't have an Asian grocery in your area, check the internet for fish sauce.

Here's a recipe for it.

5 tablespoons Thai fish sauce

1/2 cup fresh lime juice

6 sliced birds eye chiles

2 teaspoons brown sugar

2 cloves garlic , minced

Directions:

1

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until thoroughly blended.

2

Store in airtight container up to two weeks.

3

Serve with Thai Fried rice, grilled meats and satays, noodle soups or even with plain Jasmine rice.

Hope that helps.
